You want to know….
.…….about me? Yea well about that…..
Usually people take this section to list everything they’ve done in their life, boast and wait for response- yea no chances of that happening here.
I decided to make this site to post everything that stands out to me as extraordinary, or motivates me to wake up every morning from music to pictures and interviews-The interviewing side of me started at a rather young age ( I know sooo cliche’ right?) around the time when famed Tejano Superstar Selena was murdered. I remember a week before that I had just seen her newest video for “Amor Prohibido” on tv and instantly fell in love then BAM. She was gone.
This intrigued me to find out more about her life and rather than a 3 minute video clip to justify it, I did my research on her and wrote a 4 page report. I was in the 4th grade at the time and turned it into my principal, only to get it back the following semester in August with 2 candies tied to the cover. Ever since then, the stories of someones life is the most interesting aspect of this world that anyone can ever reiterate and tell. Thus, my interviews and love for journalism.
How did I get involved in radio?
A great story-one that I can believe, relate to, and never get tired of telling. MY story is below-if you are wondering how this chica ended up pushing through to you every week on your airwaves:
My love for radio started when I was 12 and frustrated with the radio signal in my parents house. I can’t remember where I received a pink Girl Talk radio for a gift but I’m thinking it was maybe Christmas- Power 92.3 came in so fuzzy that first day I tried getting any type of signal.
Now don’t get me wrong because I love where I grew up, but, it was in the middle of the desert in a valley and the nearest store was 10 miles in either direction. I grew up thinking that was normal yet now that I’m here in Phoenix and tell that story people look at me like I have 3 arms.
Back to the story:
This is the part that I think I changed my life with pole tape, screws, a 20 ft antenna, and a drill. When my parents went to the store one morning I dragged this antenna to the side of the house stood it up and carefully placed bricks underneath it to lift it up for higher signal. I wrapped the pole tape around the antenna and screwed it into the side of the house. I had already connected antenna wire to the top of it, snaked that into my window of my room; spliced the Girl Talk Radio Antenna and presto.
I was in love. The radio jocks made time go by so fast because they sounded SO excited to be doing what they do and intrigued me to want to be a part of it. Melissa the Midnight Mamacita would come on from 10-12, and I would fantasize about my boyfriend at the time singing the slow jams she played over and over…. It was a sense of freedom to me considering the closest thing to excitement I had was three wheelers and meteor showers.
Internship to promotions representative for 3 years and the rest is history- I now am a part of Power 98.3 , and am blessed to have The Pulse which is an Underground Hip-Hop show that airs EVERY Saturday from 1-4 am- make sure you’re following me on yayamartinez to keep up as to when I will be on air.
SO with that being said, I hope you get what you need from this site to learn more about what makes me tick-I started having so much work I figured nows a better time than any to share that with the world. Enjoy!

Dear Yaya, I wanted to tell you that I’m going to St. Josephs hospital in the EMU unit. I will be there from April 8th for 3 to 10 days, for some tests. I can have visitors, as many as I want. So I was wondering if you would like to come see me? Erika and Felicia are invited too. Can you all come and visit me and my Mom on the 6th floor? It would be really great.
Love, Michael

OMG Yaya, for some reason i have never clicked on the “You want to know” part of your site. Just realized my name was on here and I’m in tears. I can’t describe how proud I am of you. You’re making your dreams come true and you’ve worked hard to make it happen. I remember days when you would come into the studio pissed has hell cause you were frustrated, you stuck with it, and pushed through. Now thats inspiration. I would love to hear your boy stories and I remember telling you I was living vicariously through your boy adventures (they made me feel 21 again) lol. I can honestly say I’m doing the same when it comes to your radio success. Years ago you told me “Melis, I need to live in NY its feels right, like home.” I want to hear all about your trip to NY and your future move wink wink. Your accomplishments make me smile, your happiness brings tears to my eyes. Im very happy to be one of the many people that planted that seed and helped make radio such an important part of your life. Love you lil sis! xoxo
