Strictly Personal: Happy Birthday to MY role model and Sister, Monica

My Sister Monica, and myself on My Birthday. First time we partied together, seriously.

So recently when I was at home visiting my mom she broke out the video tapes of the younger days. I immediately cringed at how much of a little brat I could be at times, laughed a whole lot and then cried just a little. I’m sentimental to the point where memories will move me to tears, always have been that way since I was a kid apparently.

Anywho, there was a tape that my mom popped in, which was of my 7th birthday festivities before the big birthday party. It was just myself, my sister Monica, Mom, Dad, and my brother Steven all sitting in the living room opening presents. I’m sitting next to my sister Monica, who, after a while I notice is the only person I’d listen to when being told what to do.
“Go get that big present.”, “Try on your new shirt…”, ” Ok now open this one.”
As I opened my last present, I read the card which was from Monica and threw myself onto her for a big sister hug. In the present was some drawing books, color by numbers, and a lap desk that had a pillow on the bottom of it which I still have to this day. She always knew I loved to write and draw, I just find it wild I NEVER threw that lap desk away.
There was something else amazing about that certain video clip that had me in an grip, little did I know that 20 years into the future my sister Monica? Would be the exact same person she was to me as she was on my 7th birthday.
There are so many examples of a “sister” for women all over the world, but for myself I feel that anyone who is blessed to have a sister in their life that is like mine has received one of the greatest gifts of a lifetime.
I absolutely LOVE you for everything you are and the woman you have become- you’re not told that enough throughout the day so here it is. You have never been judgmental, cold hearted, or closed off when it comes to our relationship. I can call you and as soon as you gets a few minutes away from being an amazing mother, wife, friend, coach, teacher, human being- you call me back and actually listens to what I have to say. YOU inspire me on the daily to live my dreams and be myself in whatever it is I do, and you are my partner in crime if I need it.
I love you more than words can ever say, and although we’ve faced a lot of challenges in the past there was never anything that could take away how grateful I am for someone who is everything I hope to be. Anything you’d ask of me-I’d do it before you finished asking.
Strong, beautiful, loving, charismatic, amazing, this is my Happy Birthday to thee greatest sister i could ever know…and one of the few people in this world that I trust with everything I have.

My big sister Monica- Happy 3*th birthday….I love you! ;)

Meka from 2Dopeboyz: The System (Or, Why Rap To Me Really Isn’t Rap To Me Anymore)

My homie Meka is one of the best people I’ve met on chance in this busy (and sometimes fucked up) industry- as I was browsing 2dopeboyz site that he posts on, and I found this editorial where he talks about his love for New York and slight adjustments he’s made over the past few years.
I support the Dope Boyz because they always have supported me, so if you want a little insight on Mekdot, peep the writeup.

Before I left the comfortably warm breeze of California for the bipolar weather system of New York almost three years ago, I expected what almost every other transplant anticipated once they exited that plane, vehicle, boat or other modes of transportation and stepped into a foreign land: a land of opportunity, a place to start fresh and a realm where your dreams will be a reality.

For a minute, however, I thought I had made the worst decision ever in life. And believe me, I’ve made awful decisions: it’s still a hassle to get my driver’s license to this day because of some dumb stick-up kid shit I did when I was 17.

Roughly three weeks after I moved, I was on the horn with one of my closest friends looking for reasons not to move back to Los Angeles.
